Canyonlands & Arches National Parks

Approx. travel date: Fall 2018?

I love Utah, and can’t wait to get over to Canyonlands and Arches. Arches for the… arches and Canyonlands for the hiking. Since they’re so close together, it makes the most sense to do them together in one trip!

When to Go
Spring or Fall. Average high/low:

  • March 63/35
  • April 72/42
  • May 83/50
  • Sept 87/53
  • Oct 73/41
  • Nov 56/30

How to Get There
Driving: Carpinteria to Moab, UT is just over 800 miles (about 11.5 hours)
Flying: Canyonlands Field Airport (just outside of Moab) or
Grand Junction, CO (LAX –> GJT, 110 miles from Moab/1.5 hours). Looks like Delta and American are main airlines

If we fly… will have to pay for rental car (may do either way to avoid miles on the car) and parking at LAX. Unless leave car with Tom and Stephanie?

What to do: Arches

Fiery Furnace – get permit/guide! Need to book well in advance. 2 miles over 3 hours.

Devil’s Garden Primitive Loop – 7.2 miles

Delicate Arch – most famous. 3 miles out n back.

Double Arch – 0.8 miles out n back

Estimated amount of time needed: 2 days

What to do: Canyonlands, Needles

Peekaboo and Lost Canyon –  backpacking?? 18 miles. 2 nights? Lots of backpacking options in this area, need to research more. Or Big Needles Loop (23.2 miles, 2-5 nights).

What to do: Canyonlands, The Maze
Very remote to get to; requires a high clearance 4WD vehicle.

The Great Gallary – 7 miles out n back. Ranger lead hikes at 9 am on Sat & Sun in spring and fall. Gives more info on history of rock art.

Harvest Scene – 8.7 mile loop.
