A Week in Pagosa Springs

Mostly work and a little play, we still got to experience our top to-do’s in Pagosa Springs.

Our rental in Pagosa Springs was perfect for a week working remotely and exploring the local area! It was basically a one bedroom apartment, and we had a lake that Jon could fish at right behind our unit. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize until a bit later in the week that the only thing he could actually catch from the lake was catfish, so once he started fishing for catfish, it got more rewarding.

We were still working during the day, so all of our explorations had to fall outside of business hours. We still managed to fit in quite a bit throughout the week thanks to the long days! We explored Pagosa Springs, walked to a local brewery and Jon fished and I ran.

We had two “must-do’s” for our time in Pagosa: a visit to the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park and a trip to the hot springs (Pagosa Springs is known for their hot springs)!

The Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park does a feeding tour each day at 2 PM, so we arranged to be able to go in time for that. Park staff took you around to each of the animals, and explained how they came to be at the park and educated us about the species. They had wolves, bears, a bobcat, mountain lion and elk, and even a yak. Although they primarily focused on offering a sanctuary for animals native to Colorado, they occasionally also took in animals like the yak – and a donkey! – that had nowhere else to go.

It was a small property, but it was fascinating to see and learn about the animals and they all seemed well cared for and loved.

Afterwards, we took a drive to Big Meadow Reservoir, where Jon had been told there was good fishing. Jon caught several rainbow’s and a brown trout, so he was happy and I kept myself entertained with a trail run around the lake while he fished.

At the end of the week, we finally made our way to The Springs Resort and Spa to enjoy their many hot spring pools. We paid the upgrade to get access to the adults-only area, and it was worth it since it was a very popular destination! They had numerous pools to chose from, ranging in temperature from 83-114°F. Of course, I liked the cooler pools and Jon braved the hotter ones. It was a lovely relaxing afternoon. Until it rained and they pulled everyone from the water for about an hour due to lightening in the area. Yikes! Thankfully, we were able to get back in and enjoy the rest of our time vs. having to leave early.
